The algorithm was devised in the 1940s, and remains remarkably useful and applicable over a large range of process challenges.

PID stands for proportional-integral-derivative

The controller response is a combination of three response mechanism:

  • 1. proportioanl response -- proportional to the gap between the reading and the setpoint.
  • 2. integral response -- proportional to the integral of the changes between the past and present reading vs. the set point.
  • 3. derivative response -- proportional to the rate of change of the reading.

  • By adjusting the weights on the three responses, one can almost always insure a stable, fast reacting control dynamics.
