Chemical Engineering is the body of knowledge needed to transform a
chemical innovation into its industrial mold.
The traditional direction was scaling up: producing large quantities of
a substance, or a product for which the chemist has developed the
bench-grade process. Recently though, a lot of chemical engineering
knowhow is about what is referred to (somewhat inaccurately) as
"scaling down": how to produce a large number of consistent quality
appratus that would implement a micro- or nano- process invented by a
chemist.
In both cases, the chemical engineer has to estimate the cost and time
for construction, and the overall capital outlay, and otherwise provide
the business analyst with data to build the economic picture of the
enterprise.
